Gone too soon, but forever inspiring.
It feels incredibly heavy to write this. The loss of Zeel Thakkar still feels unreal. She passed away right on stage while contributing to the community she loved so much, and her absence has left all of us heartbroken.
I want to share a small story of our friendship — one that began only a few months ago, but left a lasting impact on me.
Our First Connection
I first came to know about Zeel during WordCamp Ahmedabad 2023. I didn’t know her personally then, but her work and presence in the community were already known to many.
We actually connected only a few months back, during WordCamp Asia 2025, where both of us received scholarships — I received the Diversity scholarship, and she received a Kim Parsell Memorial Scholarship. Since it was my first time travelling alone outside India, I had many doubts about flights and hotels. I wanted to understand how other scholarship recipients were planning their travel. I reached out to my friend Jagir, and that’s when I discovered that Zeel was his friend. I asked for her contact, and that’s how we first connected.
We met in Manila, stayed in the same hotel, and along with Jagir, travelled together every day by taxi to the event. Those daily rides turned into meaningful conversations, laughter, and slowly, into a sweet friendship

A Young, Bright, Unexpected Inspiration
From her confidence and achievements, I initially thought she was 27–28 years old. She had grown so well in the community — contributing to WordCamps, WP Accessibility Day and more. But while talking to her, I came to know from her that she was just 22. That truly surprised me. Such a young girl, yet so powerful in her dedication, maturity, and contribution.
She represented women in the community with grace, leadership, and courage. Her journey inspired me, and I often wondered how someone so young could achieve so much so quickly.

The Kolhapuri Keychain Story
During WordCamp Asia, I was carrying Kolhapuri chappal keychains to gift people. Even though we travelled together every day, I somehow forgot to give one to Zeel and Jagir.
After the event, she saw Juhi’s keychain post on social media and teasingly told me: “🙃🫣 You had plenty of keychens that day, so why didn’t you give me just one? I honestly didn’t expect this from you.🧐”

I promised her that next time, I would definitely bring one for her.
At WordCamp Surat, I fulfilled that promise. When we met in the morning, I told her, “I brought the keychain for you.” After my session, I gave it to her. She smiled, said it was cute, and she was genuinely happy.
I didn’t know that would be the last gift she ever received, and our conversation that afternoon would be our last personal conversation.

Her Final Moments on Stage
Later, during the closing ceremony of WordCamp Surat, all ten of us from the WordCamp Asia organizing team were standing together on stage, sharing our experiences and promoting WordCamp Asia. I was on one side, and Zeel was on the other. She spoke beautifully about her work in operations and encouraged more women to come forward and participate in community activities. After her, another organizer started speaking. Suddenly, we heard a loud sound — like something had fallen on the stage. At first, I thought maybe a stage board or some equipment had slipped. But within seconds, everyone rushed forward, and that’s when I saw that it was Zeel who had collapsed.

At first, we thought it might be weakness or fainting. But she didn’t regain consciousness. She was rushed to the hospital, and after about 45 minutes, we received the heartbreaking news:
She was no more.
A cardiac arrest. At just 23 years old.
The event stopped, and everyone was in shock. Those who witnessed it could not process what had happened. Those who weren’t there couldn’t believe it. The community had lost a rising star — a child full of dreams, and a future filled with promise.
Her Legacy Lives On
Zeel inspired countless people, especially women who saw in her a reflection of what they could become — strong, confident, and deeply committed to community.
If she were here today, she would have motivated so many more women to step up, volunteer, organize, and lead.
Even after her passing, her journey continues to inspire. Her kindness, dedication, and courage will forever remain in the heart of the WordPress community. Her loss is not just personal — it is a loss for all of us.
A light went out too soon. May her soul rest in peace.
Om Shanti.
